BMW's Vision for Electric and Hydrogen-Powered Bikes
June 25, 2023

As the world moves towards more environmentally friendly transportation options, predicting the future of motorcycle propulsion has become a challenging task, even for major brands like BMW.

While some have fully embraced electric motorcycles, others are exploring a completely different path. Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha recently announced a research partnership to investigate the viability of hydrogen-powered motorcycles.

In a recent interview, Dr. Markus Schramm, the head of BMW's motorcycle division, along with design chief Edgar Heinrich, shared BMW's vision. Dr. Schramm stated, "The BMW Group's position, especially regarding motorcycles, is to pursue technology-open solutions."

They emphasized that BMW is indeed planning for electric mobility and has already begun developing electric bikes. However, they are also continuing to advance internal combustion engine technology. Dr. Schramm believes that serious electric motorcycles will emerge before synthetic e-fuels.

They also revealed that BMW will soon introduce its first fully electric motorcycle, with a focus on urban areas. This year, we can expect to see another model specifically designed for urban environments.

"We are very optimistic about the future of electric mobility," Dr. Schramm expressed. "We are also actively pushing for the development of e-fuels because I believe that, in 20 years, people will choose e-mobility bikes not just due to regulations, but because of their emotional appeal. In the long term, around 30 years from now, I expect electric mobility to hold a significant share of over 50%. However, I am also convinced that combustion engines will continue to exist."

Edgar Heinrich added that electric motorbikes provide new opportunities for design. "Traditional bikes are primarily designed around their engines," he explained. "The engine, like a V-twin, inline-four, flat boxer engine, or Ducati's L-twin, often defines the cool and iconic bikes. But when you remove the engines and replace them with a big black box housing the electric motor, all brands have the same box. So, what becomes the defining icon of the bike?"

Heinrich concluded by highlighting the exciting possibilities that electric motorcycles offer to designers. "With electric bikes, everything is open to exploration," he said. "Suddenly, we can rearrange and rethink design. This opens up a world of super interesting possibilities, and occasionally, the designers come up with cool ideas we had never considered before.", he added.
